How to Play Classic Solitaire (Klondike)
Classic Solitaire, also called Klondike, is the most popular version of solitaire. Your goal is to move every card to the foundations in ascending order by suit.
Klondike combines planning with small tactical choices. You build down in alternating colors, flip hidden cards as you clear columns, and decide when to draw from the stock for fresh options. Every revealed card matters, so early moves should focus on opening face-down cards and keeping columns flexible.
A strong habit is to delay some foundation moves if they block progress in the tableau. Leaving a low card available can help you continue alternating color sequences and access buried cards. Empty columns are powerful because only Kings can move into them, giving you space to reorganize longer stacks.
If you want to practice, start a game on the Classic Solitaire board. When you are ready for a different challenge, compare it with Spider Solitaire or try a full-information puzzle in FreeCell. Strategy ideas are also available on the Solo Solitaire blog.
Setup
- Deal 7 tableau columns, with the top card of each column face up.
- The remaining cards form the stock pile; draw to the waste when you need new moves.
- Leave four foundation piles empty to start building from Ace to King.
Core Moves
Tableau building
Build down in alternating colors. You can move a stack of face-up cards as long as it follows the alternating color sequence.
Stock and waste
Draw cards from the stock to the waste. The top waste card can be played to the tableau or foundations when it fits.
Foundations
Build each foundation pile from Ace to King in the same suit. Clearing the tableau reveals new cards and creates space.
Winning Tips
- Prioritize uncovering face-down cards to open more options.
- Use the foundations carefully so you do not block tableau moves.
- Move Kings to empty columns to create long descending sequences.
