Turn 1 is relaxed and beginner-friendly; Turn 3 is the classic challenge. Here's how to choose and adapt.

Klondike Turn 1 vs Turn 3: Which Should You Play?

The single biggest setting in Classic Klondike Solitaire is how many cards you draw from the stock: one at a time, or three. It changes the difficulty, the pacing, and even the strategy you should use.

Turn 1: accessibility and high win rates

Drawing one card at a time means every card in the stock is reachable and playable. Win rates are high, deals rarely feel hopeless, and it's the friendliest place to learn the fundamentals — flipping hidden cards, balancing colors, and timing the foundations.

Turn 3: the classic challenge

Turn 3 deals three cards and only the top one is playable, so you see roughly a third of the stock at any moment. Winning requires tracking which cards are coming and planning the cycle so the card you need lands on top at the right time.

How strategy shifts on Turn 3

  • Cycle the stock early to learn the order before you commit tableau moves.
  • Count in threes. If a card you need is buried, work out how many cycles until it surfaces.
  • Keep more options open in the tableau, because you can't rely on instant access to the stock.

Which should you choose?

If you're new or want a relaxing session, play Turn 1. If you want the traditional test of skill that solitaire is famous for, play Turn 3. Many players warm up on Turn 1 and switch to Turn 3 once their planning is sharp. Both modes are a click away on the Classic Solitaire board, and the Classic Solitaire guide covers the rules in full.
